The above pictures illustrate how prevalent popular culture references were in creating messages about the Wisconsin protests. Many times, as shown in the posters with Harry Potter character, Dumbledore; Seinfeld character Kramer; Batman; and Justin Bieber, these pop culture icons serve as a sort of endorsement: Dumbledore wouldn't approve of the proposed bill, and you shouldn't, either. Batman doesn't approve of Scott Walker, and you shouldn't, either. Kramer wants solidarity now, and you should too. These references catch the audience's eye. People are generally familiar with Star Wars, with Internet memes such as lolcats, and with the popular "Keep Calm and Carry On" image that has been widely circulated recently. Connecting messages about Scott Walker and the protests with these popular items likely makes these messages more relevant for or more interesting to the public, and it certainly makes the posters and signs more interesting to look at.
